From towering sand dunes and dramatic canyons to endless desert roads, it’s one of Africa’s most visually striking destinations. However, Namibia isn’t the easiest country to navigate — especially for solo travellers. I will write down my Namibia itinerary and the changes I would make to for my next trip!

If you’re keen to see as much of Namibia as possible, joining a guided tour can be a greatfantastic option. On the other hand, if you’re travelling as a couple or group, a self-drive road trip might be the perfect way to explore the country at your own pace. In this post, I’ll share my Namibia tour itinerary, highlight which stops I’d keep or skip, and compare guided tours versus self-drive travel to help you decide what’s best for you.

My Namibia itinerary

Cape Town to Fish River Canyon

Our journey started in Cape Town, with the first few days spent driving through South Africa towards Namibia. Our first stop in Namibia was Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa and the second largest in the world. Standing on the rim at sunset was breathtaking, but due to its remote location and long drive, this is one stop I’d skip if you’re short on time.

Sossusvlei & Deadvlei

After a long 10-hour drive, we arrived in Sossusvlei, one of my absolute favourite places in Namibia. We started the next day early to catch sunrise at Dune 45 before heading to Deadvlei. This area is an absolute must-visit, with its white clay pan and ancient dead trees creating one of Namibia’s most iconic landscapes.

We also stopped briefly at Sesriem Canyon, which felt underwhelming compared to Sossusvlei. If you want to visit, I’d recommend dedicating more time to hiking the canyon rather than doing a quick stop.

Swakopmund

Swakopmund is Namibia’s adventure capital. Here you can explore the sand dunes, visit Sandwich Harbour, or go skydiving if you’re after an adrenaline rush. The town also has great restaurants and bars along the beachfront. One highlight for me was visiting Mondesa, the local township, and eating at local restaurants, something I highly recommend.

Spitzkoppe

After Swakopmund, we drove to Spitzkoppe and stayed overnight at a campsite surrounded by mesmerising granite rock formations. This was one of the most memorable stops of the trip and works well as an overnight stay or a day trip from Swakopmund.

Etosha National Park

We continued north to Etosha National Park. While it’s one of Namibia’s most famous destinations, our wildlife sightings were limited. Though sitting by the watering hole after dark waiting for the animals to come by was truly amazing. But if safari experiences are your main priority, countries like Botswana, Tanzania, or South Africa may offer better game viewing. In Namibia, the landscapes are truly the star.

Waterberg Plateau & Windhoek

Our final stops were Waterberg Plateau and Windhoek. Waterberg is scenic but very quiet, and I wouldn’t recommend staying more than one night. Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, is worth a short visit, but one day is more than enough to see the main attractions.

Tips for Self-Driving in Namibia

If you’re planning a self-drive road trip in Namibia:

Rent a 4×4 vehicle

Travel with at least two confident drivers

Carry a satellite phone for emergencies

Start driving early and avoid night driving

Plan fuel stops carefully

The absolute highlights not to miss are Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Sandwich Harbour, and Skeleton Coast. Etosha can be a great addition, but I wouldn’t make it the main focus of your itinerary.

Final Thoughts: Self-Drive or Tour?

Both options are fantastic! It really comes down to your travel style, confidence, and time. Tours are ideal for solo travellers or those wanting a hassle-free experience, while self-driving offers unmatched freedom for couples and small groups.

Want a personalised Namibia itinerary tailored to your travel style?
Get in touch at hello@wanderlusttravels.eu or read more about what I do here.

Travelling through the vast and varied landscapes of Namibia is truly incredible.
